Hidden Figures

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

Imagine this: It’s the year 1961 during the great space race between America and Russia. You and two of your friends are on your way to work when your car breaks down, normally this wouldn’t be too much of an issue but you and your friends are black women. In the 1960’s especially America was going through a huge social change and racism was hugely present with extreme bias everywhere. Not only do you have to fear losing your job for being too late, but now a white cop is coming by, one who for the majority of his life has been reinforced to hate you and people like you. This kind of situation is exactly what Katherine Johnson and her friends had to go through in Hidden Figures.

Hidden figures is a great story based on true events that portrays the struggles that African Americans had to go through for a majority of their lives, as well as the story of how America put a man in space and brought him back home. I would definitely recommend any person to watch it not just because of the social impact of the movie, but also due to the real life STEM applications as well.

The story follows Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson working on putting John Glenn into space. Each and every one of them has an incredible determination and drive that is inspiring. It is this determination that leads to America taking its first steps into space, and it is that same determination that will lead the world as a whole to greater developments.
