World Water Day is meant to bring attention to people who don’t have access to clean water, how the water supply on Earth is being affected, and how you can help. This year for World Water Day, UN Water is having people speak about what water means to them. People are explaining the importance of water in their daily lives. Everyone uses water to shower, cook, clean, and drink. Some people don’t have access to water like we do, and World Water Day is meant to show us how often we take water for granted. World Water Day is also meant to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. World Water Day was first celebrated in 1993 after being proposed in 1992. Previous themes of World Water Day include sanitation (2008), water and food security (2012), water and energy (2014), water and sustainable development (2015), and water and climate change (2020).

The theme in 2021 is valuing water. Because of the pandemic, World Water Day will be celebrated through an online event. On World Water Day itself, a document is released, focusing on the same topic as the campaign and recommending policy direction to decision makers. Without understanding the value of water, it’s impossible for us to guard this resource to the benefit of everyone, and to reach SDG 6 by 2030. At PECIL, we celebrate World Water Day in our own way. Students participate in PBI Global to highlight the importance of water in our daily lives and learn how to help reach SDG 6.
