Cinco de Mayo

On may 5th, Cinco de Mayo, which is also known as Battle of Puebla Day, helps remember the victory of Mexico against the french in 1862, but it also celebrates mexican heritage. Cinco de Mayo is not a mexican independence day, as most believe, it celebrates a battle in which Mexico had fought to protect their land.

Although, you don't want to get Cinco de Mayo mixed up with Mexico's Independence Day (which is on september 16). A little known fact is that most Mexicans don't celebrate CInco de Mayo, It’s celebrated mostly by Americans.



Ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo:

  • Support a Mexican business

  • Learn the real history of Cinco de Mayo

  • Read about the Battle of Puebla

  • You can decorate your home, but make sure you using the right decor

  • Get a pinata and have a go at it, or if you're feeling crafty, make your own

  • Learn some traditional Mexican dances like the Jarabe Tapatio, La Bamba or the Cumbia, there are many youtube videos of how to do these dances

  • Have a party, and as traditions go, no Cinco de Mayo celebrations is one without margaritas, but for minors, you can make a non-alcoholic margaritas

Here’s a little fun fact

Mexico's victory in the battle of Puebla, has tied in with the Civil War, preventing the French emperor from helping the Confederacy.
