National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day - April 30, 2021

April 30th is National Adopt a Shelter Pet day. This day was created to spread awareness of the animals in shelters awaiting adoption. According to the Humane Society, 6-8 million animals enter shelters every year.

The Shelter Pet Project is a collaborative effort of the two leading animal welfare groups, the Humane Society and Maddie’s Fund, as well as the Ad Council to help people find shelter pets to adopt instead of shopping for a pet. Pets that are bought are often a product of breeding facilities which only breed for profit, ignoring the needs of the puppies and their parents. By adopting a pet from a shelter, you can avoid supporting the puppy mill industry and give a pet a home at the same time.

Shelter pets are often already vaccinated, trained, and well behaved. The main reasons animals are put in shelters is because the owner gave them up or they were found in the street. Moving and landlord issues are also a cause.

You yourself can adopt an animal from Person County Animal Services. Currently the Person County homepage lists two pitbulls, Dusty and Kane. They are both male and are looking for a home.
