World Meteorological Day takes place every year on March 23, commemorating the date, in 1950, when the convention establishing the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) came into force. Further, this international organization collects data from all over the world to
understand better the weather and its impact on our lives. The daily forecasts we receive help us plan our activities throughout the day. It tracks climate damage, including changing sea levels, fluctuations in temperature, and rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Lastly, they warn us about natural disasters, which give us enough time to evacuate an area or make the necessary preparations to be safe.
The World Meteorological Day theme for 2021 is The ocean, our climate, and weather. It celebrates WMO’s focus in connecting the ocean, the climate, and weather, within the Earth System. One of the main drivers of the world’s weather and climate is the ocean. It plays a central role in climate change and a vital driver of the global economy, carrying more than 90% of trade and sustaining the 40% of humanity that lives within 100 km of the coast. The National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and researchers regularly monitor the ocean, its effect on the atmosphere, and its changes over time. Therefore, to reduce climate change, they
have created a wide variety of marine services, including coastal management and the Safety of Life at Sea treaty.
